Project Hail Mary delivers the kind of inventive, emotionally satisfying science-fiction adventure that has become increasingly rare in a landscape crowded with sequels and live-action remakes.
The film’s immersive opening leaves viewers as disoriented as its central character, Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling. As Grace gradually recovers his memories and confronts the reality of his unstable situation, the story reveals its central twist at a natural, climactic pace. His shifting emotions and beliefs allow the audience to make those discoveries alongside him, giving the film’s biggest moments greater weight.
Grace could easily have been written as an uncomplicated hero driven solely by a desire to save Earth. Instead, the filmmakers give him a complicated past and choices that make him more believable. He is imperfect, but his continued effort to do what he considers right—and his commitment to completing humanity’s rescue mission—keeps the audience invested in him.
The film’s greatest achievement, however, may be Rocky, the helpful alien whose appearance was revealed in trailers. Rocky joins Grace in an effort to save both of their planets, but he avoids the familiar portrayal of extraterrestrials as either terrifying monsters or intellectually inferior creatures. He communicates and collaborates with Grace as an equal.
Their ability to understand one another occasionally develops too quickly to feel entirely convincing. Beyond that weakness, their relationship is deeply affecting. Stranded far from home and dependent upon each other, Grace and Rocky form a bond built on trust, gratitude and the shared burden of protecting their worlds.
That connection is especially impressive because Rocky lacks the humanlike features commonly used to generate sympathy. He has no expressive eyes or familiar face—he is, quite literally, rocky. Yet the performance and puppeteering give him such personality that an audience may find itself moved to tears over what appears to be a bundle of minerals.
Although the story unfolds against a bleak threat, hope ultimately defines the film. It might have become a relentlessly dark psychological thriller, but moments of warmth and humor keep the mission from sinking into despair. Grace and Rocky’s companionship offers a simple message: even unimaginably difficult circumstances can contain friendship and joy.
Creating a film that feels artistically ambitious while remaining genuinely fun is no small accomplishment. Project Hail Mary manages both, bringing fresh energy and optimism to the screen—and offering a persuasive case for more original movies to follow.
