Three Fairfax County Public Schools students and six FCPS parents were killed in the Jan. 29 accident at Reagan National Airport, Superintendent Michelle C. Reid announced Thursday.
Many of those aboard the flight were returning from a figure skating event in Wichita, Kansas. The deaths affect multiple FCPS schools and departments, and two of the parents killed were current or former school system employees.
FCPS did not release the victims’ names, citing the privacy of their families. Reid acknowledged the widespread grief among the victims’ siblings, spouses, relatives, friends and colleagues.
Principals, teachers, counselors and crisis teams are providing support to students, employees and families across the school system. FCPS also made resources available to help parents navigate difficult conversations with their children.
Reid thanked first responders and community partners and said the school system would share further updates when possible.
