The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics has elected Falls Church resident Rod Hupp as its 2025 chairman as organizers prepare for another possible year of record participation.
Hupp, 72, is a retired IT project manager and an active competitor. He entered 22 events in 2024, earning multiple gold and silver medals. He is also an Elks member and participates in Civil War reenactments.
The 2025 games are scheduled to run from Sept. 13 through Sept. 30, although Hupp said the closing date could change to accommodate new events and rising participation. The competition drew a record 1,040 participants last year, and organizers expect another record in 2025.
Registration opens online July 7 and remains $20. Participants must be at least 50 years old by Dec. 31 and live in one of the sponsoring Northern Virginia jurisdictions.
More than 70 indoor and outdoor events are planned. Most competitions are divided by gender, while some are co-ed, with participants grouped in five- or 10-year age divisions. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded after each event.
Opening-day festivities will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington, followed by track and rowing competitions. Other events will be held during the following two weeks at venues across the participating jurisdictions.
Volunteer positions and Gold, Silver and Bronze patron opportunities are also available. Additional information can be requested by email at nvso1982@gmail.com.
