Fairfax County police will launch the third wave of their “Road Shark” traffic enforcement campaign Aug. 10, following five fatal crashes in two days and a surge in citations and warnings during the initiative’s June phase.
The Fairfax County Police Department and Virginia State Police are targeting speeding, reckless driving and distracted driving through the annual three-wave campaign, which began in late April.
Officers issued 13,520 citations and warnings during the first wave. From June 8 through June 14, the second phase produced 5,740 citations and 6,051 warnings—up from a combined 8,250 during the same wave the previous year.
The renewed enforcement follows a deadly stretch on county roads. Four pedestrians and one motorcyclist were killed in five crashes over two days.
Deputy Chief Dalton Becker said alcohol, speeding or other forms of reckless driving were factors in all five incidents. Some drivers were charged with driving under the influence, while additional laboratory results were pending.
The crashes raised the number of pedestrians killed on Fairfax County roads this year to 10.
