Fairfax County Public Schools opened two hours late Tuesday, Jan. 21, as lingering snow from Sunday’s storm combined with frigid overnight temperatures.
Central Office employees were permitted to arrive two hours after their usual start times, but no later than 10 a.m. Offices opened to the public at 10 a.m.
More wintry weather was possible after 10 a.m., with flurries, cloudy skies and a high near 22 degrees. Tuesday night’s forecast called for a slight chance of snow showers before midnight, followed by clearing skies and a low near 9. Wind chills could fall to 3 below zero, with a 20% chance of precipitation.
Federal Workers Ordered Back to Offices
Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump signed an executive action directing federal agencies to require employees to return to their offices full time.
Unions whose contracts permit telework indicated that they could pursue legal action. Trump also imposed a hiring freeze across most federal agencies, with the military among the notable exceptions.
Fairfax Motorcyclist Dies After Manassas Collision
A Fairfax man was killed when his motorcycle collided with an SUV in Manassas.
Prince William County police said the crash occurred shortly after 3:40 p.m. Friday on Centreville Road near Breeden Avenue.
Tysons Casino Proposal Moves Forward
A Virginia Senate gaming subcommittee voted 5-2 Monday to advance legislation that would make Fairfax County eligible to host a casino.
Sen. Adam Ebbin, a Democrat representing District 39, abstained from the vote on Sen. Scott Surovell’s bill. The full Senate General Laws and Technology Committee was scheduled to consider the measure at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Former Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland Dies
Gerald W. “Gerry” Hyland, a former Mount Vernon District supervisor and longtime Fairfax County community leader, died over the weekend.
Hyland represented the district on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors from 1987 through 2015. He also founded the nonprofit Mount Vernon at Home and served on several boards and commissions.
Hispanic Grocery Store Nears Annandale Opening
Megamart, a supermarket focused on serving the Hispanic community, was expected to open in Annandale in late February or early March.
The store is taking over the former Party Co and AnnSandra space at 4415 John Marr Drive.
Falls Church Pursues Land for First Roundabout
The Falls Church City Council voted to pursue eminent domain as the city works to construct its first roundabout.
Officials have sought about 1% of the 2.48-acre Bowl America property for the project. The traffic circle would replace the four-way intersection at South Maple Avenue and Annandale Road.
Fairfax Housing Sales Outpace Arlington’s Growth
Fairfax County finished 2024 with stronger growth in closed home sales than Arlington County.
Although Arlington remained the region’s most expensive county for home sale prices during much of the year, Fairfax recorded an increase in closed sales more than twice as large as Arlington’s.
