Fairfax County Public Schools will remain closed Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, as snow and ice continue to make sidewalks and bus stops unsafe. School offices and central offices will open to the public at 10 a.m.

Although the Virginia Department of Transportation has prioritized clearing secondary roads, many sidewalks and bus stops remain covered in snow. The school system has about 45,000 bus stops across the county.

FCPS said custodial, facilities, transportation and grounds crews have been working around the clock to prepare schools and vehicles for a safe reopening.

All extracurricular activities, athletic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses are canceled. Adult High School and GED programs, Adult and Community Education classes, recreation programs and use of school facilities by outside groups are also canceled.

School Age Child Care centers will be closed, and homebound and home-based instruction will not take place.

FCPS plans to provide an update Thursday about the school system’s status for Friday.
