Fairfax County public schools will remain closed Wednesday, January 8, 2025, as uncleared neighborhood roads, blocked bus stops and untreated sidewalks continue to create safety concerns following consecutive snowfalls.

School offices and central offices will open to the public at 11 a.m. Twelve-month employees assigned to those offices should report to work, subject to safety and child care concerns, and consult their supervisors or program managers as needed.

Crews have worked around the clock since Sunday night to clear school parking lots and walkways. County and Virginia Department of Transportation teams have also been clearing roads, but the back-to-back storms slowed progress.

After the initial 8 to 12 inches of snow, another 1 to 4 inches forced road crews to return to highways, parkways and other primary routes before reaching many secondary and neighborhood streets.

Plowed snow piles have also obstructed visibility and access at some bus stops. About 130,000 students ride FCPS buses each day, while approximately 50,000 others use different transportation, including walking and biking. Many sidewalks remain untreated.

Extracurricular activities, athletic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses are canceled. Adult High School, GED and Adult and Community Education classes will not meet.

Recreation programs and community use by outside groups are canceled, and School Age Child Care centers will be closed. Homebound and home-based instruction are also canceled.
