Snow prompted Fairfax County to close government offices, courts and libraries Monday, Feb. 23. County employees who are not emergency personnel received emergency administrative leave, while emergency workers were directed to report as scheduled.
Fairfax Connector is operating at holiday weekday service levels.
Street race closes McLean intersection
Police closed Georgetown Pike and Dolley Madison Boulevard in McLean early Sunday morning after an apparent street race. Authorities initially believed a pedestrian had been struck by one of the drivers, but no injuries were ultimately reported.
Tysons attorney appointed, then removed
Federal judges in Virginia’s Eastern District unanimously appointed longtime litigator James W. Hundley as interim U.S. attorney Friday, only for the Justice Department to fire him almost immediately amid a dispute over control of the prominent prosecutor’s office.
Hundley previously served as a Fairfax County prosecutor and co-founded Briglia Hundley, a law firm based in Tysons.
Amentum plans Reston headquarters
Engineering and technology company Amentum has leased 45,000 square feet at Reston Station and plans to move its headquarters from Chantilly early next year.
The company will occupy space at 1900 Reston Metro Plaza, a 365,000-square-foot glass office tower that also houses Google. Amentum’s new headquarters is expected to include a technology showcase for clients.
Potomac sewage spill fuels concerns
A major sewage spill in the Potomac River is raising broader concerns about aging infrastructure and the ability of sewer systems to withstand increasingly intense storms.
The accident ranks among the largest sewage spills in U.S. history. Gussie Maguire, a Maryland staff scientist with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, said it highlights a persistent problem confronting communities nationwide.
Public input sought on Connector routes
Fairfax Connector is considering service changes affecting several routes, including the 401 and 402 through Annandale.
Two virtual public meetings are scheduled for Feb. 24 at noon and 7 p.m. If approved, the changes would begin June 27.
Virginia lawmakers consider AI restrictions
State legislators in Richmond are weighing limits on artificial intelligence, although a federal funding threat could hinder new regulations. An executive order from President Donald Trump threatens to withhold broadband expansion money from states that regulate the technology.
One pending bill from state Sen. Saddam Salim, a Democrat representing District 37, would require disclaimers on political advertisements that use AI.
Students host adaptive baseball clinic
Twenty-five young athletes with disabilities participated Saturday in the first adaptive baseball clinic at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County.
The school’s varsity baseball team hosted the packed-gym event. Andrew Haydon, a 17-year-old junior who created the clinic, led the program.
Clarity seeks alcohol license
Clarity is applying for a restaurant alcohol license covering wine, beer and mixed drinks at its new Reston Town Center location. The legal notice provides a 30-day period for objections.
Snow and strong winds in the forecast
Snow is most likely before 1 p.m. Monday, with cloudy skies, a high near 39 degrees and a 40% chance of precipitation. Northwest winds of 17 to 20 mph could gust to 33 mph.
Monday night should shift from mostly cloudy to mostly clear, with temperatures falling to about 23 degrees. Northwest winds will continue at 14 to 17 mph, with gusts reaching 26 mph.
