McLean Project for the Arts will open three solo exhibitions on April 10, 2025, bringing together mixed-media works, an immersive installation and art exploring cultural identity.

The spring lineup features Heidi Fowler’s “Detrimorphose,” Jackie Hoysted’s “Rudimental” and Emon Surakitkoson’s “Crossing Culture.” An opening reception is scheduled for April 17 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The artists were selected from more than 200 applicants during the organization’s latest open call for proposals. Artistic Director and Curator Nancy Sausser said their work stood out for its strength and originality, with each artist offering a markedly different creative approach.

In the Atrium Gallery, Fowler’s “Detrimorphose” examines brokenness and redemption through mixed-media paintings. Her assemblages incorporate discarded objects such as junk mail, plastic, weathered materials and old computer components, reconsidering items that might otherwise be thrown away. The work explores the tension between creative beauty and human priorities.

Hoysted’s “Rudimental,” located in the Emerson Gallery, uses basic geometric forms and meditative sounds to create an interactive, immersive environment. The installation evokes nature and interconnectedness while reflecting on ancestral relationships with the land, the planet and the wider universe. It calls for reciprocity, mutual respect and recognition of humanity’s small place within the cosmos.

Also in the Emerson Gallery, Surakitkoson’s “Crossing Culture” presents two bodies of recent work developed during the previous five years. The Thai-American artist joins canvases and wood panels into compositions whose individual elements gain new meaning as parts of a larger whole.

Surakitkoson also uses sculpture to develop a new visual language. Together, the works reflect her personal and artistic growth as she navigates the complexities of being an immigrant from Thailand living in the United States.

Additional free public programs include an artist talk at 11 a.m. May 10 and a Tea & Talk at 11 a.m. June 4.

The Atrium Gallery can be visited during McLean Community Center operating hours. The Emerson Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
