Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology offered admission to 550 students for its Class of 2029, marking the fifth consecutive year that every Fairfax County public middle school is represented.
The students were selected from 2,605 applicants, whose average GPA was 3.91. Those receiving offers averaged a 3.96 GPA, consistent with previous years, and all met the accelerated coursework and minimum GPA requirements.
The incoming class also includes students from Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties and the City of Falls Church.
Among those offered admission, 10.5% are economically disadvantaged, 6.5% are multilingual learners and 3.8% receive special education services.
The racial composition of the admitted group is:
- Asian: 62.7%
- White: 21.6%
- Hispanic: 5.5%
- Two or more races: 5.5%
- Black: 4.4%
The admissions process was changed in 2020 to broaden access for students from middle schools that had historically been underrepresented. Before that change, TJHSST had not admitted students from every FCPS middle school. Application reviewers do not know candidates’ names, schools, races or genders.
Carson and Longfellow middle schools each had 48 students receive offers. Cooper had 25, Rocky Run had 22, Frost had 19, Lake Braddock had 17, Katherine Johnson had 14 and Kilmer had 13. Every other FCPS middle school had 10 or fewer students admitted.
Established in 1985, TJHSST is a Governor’s School with a rigorous academic program centered on science, mathematics and technology.
