A multi-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer shut down northbound Interstate 495 in Tysons on Tuesday morning, July 1, leaving traffic backed up for about 4 miles during rush hour.
Police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department crews were dispatched around 9:20 a.m. to the Capital Beltway north of Route 7 and south of Route 123. The collision reportedly involved a tractor-trailer, another truck and two sedans.
A fire department crew reported over the scanner that one patient was trapped with a head injury and that as many as five people may have needed medical attention.
Responders initially closed all northbound general-purpose lanes. Drivers later began passing the scene in the two left lanes while the right-center lane, right lane and right shoulder remained closed.
By 10:06 a.m., delays stretched for approximately 4 miles and began before Route 236. The Beltway Express Lanes remained open.
The crash also caused traffic to back up on eastbound Interstate 66.
