A tractor-trailer caught fire after colliding with a sedan on I-66 West near Vienna on Monday afternoon, closing every westbound lane and sending one person to the hospital.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the highway before Nutley Street at about 1:15 p.m. on March 24, 2025. They arrived to find the tractor-trailer burning after the crash.

Firefighters closed the westbound lanes at the Nutley Street exit in Oakton while they worked to extinguish the blaze. By 2:08 p.m., traffic backups stretched approximately 4 miles, and drivers were urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes.

The left lane at Exit 62A reopened shortly after 2:30 p.m.

One occupant was hospitalized with injuries considered non-life-threatening. Officials did not say whether the injured person had been traveling in the truck or the sedan, although scanner traffic indicated the tractor-trailer driver requested emergency medical assistance.
