Two Fairfax County principals are strengthening their school communities with initiatives designed to give students, staff members, and families greater support and a stronger sense of belonging.
Justin Simmons of South County Middle School and Georgina Aye of Fairfax High School were recognized during the FCPS Honors celebration in spring 2025. Their work was highlighted again for National Principals Month in October.
At South County Middle, Simmons helped create a Retake Testing Center that offers students a structured opportunity to retake exams. He developed and evaluated the program with student input to ensure it would be practical and useful.
Beyond improving access to retakes, the center encourages students to take responsibility for their education and make decisions about their learning. A letter supporting Simmons’ recognition said the school’s “Take Charge” motto can define students’ middle school experience and help prepare them for the future.
Staff members also credited Simmons with creating a positive working environment by listening to employees and recognizing their different strengths. One supporter described his optimism and energy as contagious, saying they empower students, employees, and community members to grow.
At Fairfax High School, Aye has focused on creating an inclusive and forward-looking culture. A colleague said she regularly greets students and works to ensure their perspectives are heard when decisions are made.
Aye has extended that outreach to families by leading evening classes for Spanish-speaking parents. The classes bring families into the school while helping build stronger connections and understanding.
She has also established Joy Coordinators to cultivate a caring workplace and support social-emotional learning among staff members. Letters backing her recognition praised her ability to create community and described her as a steady source of positivity.
Together, Simmons and Aye demonstrate how school leadership can translate empathy into practical programs that help students learn, employees thrive, and families feel welcome.
