A family’s cross-country journey unfolds across two generations in Young Americans, Lauren Yee’s intergenerational dramedy coming to 1st Stage in Tysons from April 9 through April 26.

The play follows Joe and Jenny, a young immigrant couple driving across the country toward their new home. Along the way, they grow closer through roadside landmarks, motel stays and unexpectedly memorable visits to IHOP.

Twenty years later, Joe makes the journey again with Lucy, the couple’s 19-year-old daughter. Moving between the two road trips, the story explores the family’s history and the distances people travel for those they love.

The cast features returning 1st Stage performers Jasmine Joy Brooks, Surasree Das and Shawn Sebastian Naar. Nikki Mirza directs the production.

Debra Kim Sivigny designed the scenery, with Sophie Smrcka serving as associate scenic designer and projection designer. The creative team also includes lighting designer Emily Pann, sound designer Adam Mendelson, costume designer Paris Washington, props designer Erica Bass and intimacy coach Lorraine Ressegger.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. The approximately 90-minute production has no intermission.

General-admission tickets are dynamically priced at $25, $40 and $55, with limited availability at the two lower prices. Tickets for students, educators and military members cost $15. Select performances will offer captions and audio description.
