Dominic Williams remembers struggling in school until a fourth grade teacher made him feel seen and heard. Now, as assistant principal at Union Mill Elementary School, he works to give every student that same sense of belonging.
Williams was named Fairfax County Public Schools’ 2025 Outstanding School-Based Leader. His recognition was highlighted during National Assistant Principals Week, observed this year from April 6-10.
His education career began in the county’s School Age Child Care program. He later served FCPS as a substitute teacher, instructional assistant, special education and crisis resource teacher, and assistant principal.
Williams arrived at Union Mill in 2023. Since then, he has helped the school earn a Purple Star designation for supporting military families, strengthening the transition assistance available to military-connected and other new students.
He also works directly with students to produce weekly shoutout videos celebrating exceptional students and staff members.
Principal Scott Hawk said Williams places staff, students, and families at the heart of learning while bringing positive energy to the school.
“Mr. Williams empowers staff, students, and families by putting them at the center of the learning process,” Hawk said. “His positive energy and dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive school environment make him an outstanding leader.”
