Fairfax County Public Schools will close all schools and central offices Monday, Jan. 26, as Winter Storm Fern brings snow, sleet and hazardous travel conditions to the region.
All school programs and activities on school grounds are canceled. The closures include extracurricular activities, athletic contests and practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional training, adult education classes, homebound instruction and community recreation programs.
School Age Child Care and Beyond the Bell centers will also be closed.
The National Weather Service placed Fairfax County and the rest of the Washington region under a Winter Storm Warning through 4 a.m. Monday. Forecasters expected 6 to 10 inches of snow and sleet, followed by a mix of sleet and freezing rain Sunday afternoon.
Icy conditions could persist after the storm because temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the week.
FCPS employees designated as essential personnel should follow instructions from their supervisors. All other employees are authorized to take emergency administrative leave. Additional updates will be posted on the FCPS website and mobile app.
The storm is also disrupting waste collection. Fairfax County and the Town of Vienna canceled Monday trash and recycling service, shifting pickups to Tuesday, Jan. 27. The Town of Herndon will not collect recycling Monday or Tuesday.
