Fairfax County Public Schools will open two hours late Tuesday, March 3, as an overnight wintry mix threatens to make roads slippery during the morning commute.
All schools and central offices are included in the delay. Central offices will open to the public at 10 a.m.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday for parts of northern and northwestern Virginia and central Maryland. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow and about one-tenth of an inch of ice.
Snow or sleet could briefly fall overnight, but freezing rain is expected to be the main travel concern. The precipitation should turn to rain by midmorning Tuesday. Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution.
The delayed opening will change or cancel several FCPS programs:
- Morning preschool and special education classes are canceled.
- Full-day preschool, special education, and Early Head Start/PreK classes will begin two hours late.
- Morning field trips are canceled.
- Morning transportation for high school academy classes is canceled. Transportation will run for academy classes beginning after 12:45 p.m.
- Adult High School and GED courses will start two hours late.
- Homebound instruction will begin at 10 a.m.
- School Age Child Care and Beyond the Bell centers will open at 8 a.m.
Afternoon preschool and Adult and Community Education classes will follow their regular schedules.
Twelve-month employees assigned to central and school offices must report in person by 10 a.m. Employees eligible for telework may work remotely or take unscheduled leave after notifying their supervisors.
FCPS plans to post additional updates on its website and mobile app.
