Fairfax County Public Schools canceled classes and closed central offices for Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, as accumulating snow created slick roads across the region.

The district had initially announced a two-hour delay but changed course shortly after 6:20 p.m. Sunday because of worsening weather conditions.

All extracurricular activities, athletic contests, team practices, field trips and middle school after-school programs are canceled. Professional training, adult high school and GED programs, Adult and Community Education classes, homebound instruction, recreation programs and community use of school facilities are also called off.

School Age Child Care and Beyond the Bell centers will remain closed. Essential employees should follow directions from their supervisors, while emergency administrative leave is authorized for other personnel.

Fairfax County government offices will also close Monday, affecting courts, libraries and other public services. Fairfax Connector is expected to run its regular weekday schedule, though snow-related detours are possible.

The National Weather Service forecast 2 to 4 inches of snow across Washington, Northern Virginia and the Maryland suburbs, with localized totals near 5 inches. Northwest wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph were expected overnight into Monday.

A Winter Weather Advisory was scheduled to remain in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday. It replaced an earlier Winter Storm Watch that had raised the possibility of at least 5 inches of accumulation.

Rain or a rain-snow mix was expected to turn entirely to snow between 4 and 6 p.m., with the steadiest snowfall occurring Sunday night. Although the storm’s most severe effects were forecast farther north, hazardous roads could disrupt Monday morning travel in the D.C. area.

Fairfax County police said crashes were already being reported on slick roads Sunday. The department urged residents to avoid unnecessary trips, reduce their speed and allow extra travel time.
