Two drivers were killed early Sunday in a head-on crash caused by a vehicle traveling the wrong way in the northbound I-495 Express Lanes near Dunn Loring, Virginia State Police said.
Police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department crews responded around 2:34 a.m. to the toll lanes south of Leesburg Pike, where scanner traffic reported an injury crash and a vehicle on fire.
The collision occurred near mile marker 48, between the Route 7 and I-66 interchanges. State police said a 2017 Ford Edge was traveling south in the northbound lanes when it struck a 2004 Jeep Patriot head-on.
Both drivers died at the scene. Police identified the Ford driver as Tremayne Gross, 24, of Washington, D.C., and the Jeep driver as Meghan Elizabeth Mathis, 32, of Westminister, Maryland.
Both were wearing seatbelts, and neither vehicle carried passengers, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation.
Preliminary state data recorded 13 traffic deaths in Fairfax County through April. A teenage driver was also killed after crashing into a tree on Chapel Road in Clifton on May 8. The deaths of Gross and Mathis bring the county’s reported 2025 traffic fatality total to 16.
