A pursuit spanning two Northern Virginia counties ended Friday afternoon after a driver traveled the wrong way on Interstate 95, struck a state police cruiser and two civilian vehicles, and fled on foot before being arrested.
The incident began around 3 p.m. when Fairfax County police spotted a 2011 Dodge Nitro connected to a possible domestic kidnapping reported in Prince William County.
Virginia State Police attempted to stop the vehicle on northbound I-95, but the driver, identified as Woodbridge resident Carlos Gomez Lozano, did not pull over. Police followed the SUV onto eastbound Interstate 495 before ending the pursuit at the Maryland state line.
About 90 minutes later, Prince William County police located the same vehicle in Dale City. The driver again refused to stop, prompting another pursuit that returned to I-95.
Near Prince William County Parkway, a state trooper attempted a maneuver to stop the SUV. Gomez Lozano evaded the attempt by driving south in the northbound lanes of I-95.
The pursuit ended when the Dodge crashed into a responding trooper’s cruiser and two civilian vehicles. Gomez Lozano ran from the scene but was quickly taken into custody by Prince William County police.
The trooper suffered minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Prince William County police are continuing to investigate both the crash and the reported abduction.
