Seventeen Fairfax County Public Schools high schools earned spots on the College Board’s 2025 Advanced Placement School Honor Roll, with six receiving the program’s highest distinction.

The annual honor roll recognizes schools for expanding participation in AP courses and exams, helping students earn potential college credit and preparing them for college. Schools qualify at the bronze, silver, gold or platinum level based on results from their most recent graduating class.

Six schools reach platinum

The FCPS schools recognized at each level are:

Platinum-level schools include:

  • Madison High School
  • Langley High School
  • McLean High School
  • Oakton High School
  • Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
  • Woodson High School

Gold-level schools include:

  • Chantilly High School
  • Fairfax High School
  • Hayfield Secondary School
  • Lake Braddock Secondary School

Silver-level schools include:

  • Centreville High School
  • Herndon High School
  • South County High School
  • Westfield High School
  • West Springfield High School

Bronze-level schools include:

  • Falls Church High School
  • West Potomac High School

How schools qualify

The College Board measures schools in three areas: the share of graduates who took at least one AP exam, the share who scored 3 or higher on at least one exam, and the share who took five or more AP exams.

Bronze schools must reach thresholds of 40% for exam participation, 25% for earning a score of at least 3 and 2% for taking five or more exams.

Silver recognition requires rates of 50%, 30% and 5%, respectively. Gold requires 65%, 35% and 10%, while platinum schools must reach 80%, 50% and 15%.

For the five-exam measure, at least one exam must have been taken in ninth or 10th grade. The requirement is intended to encourage students to distribute their AP coursework across multiple years instead of concentrating the pressure in a single year.

AP courses and exams allow high school students to complete college-level work and potentially earn college credit. FCPS covers fees for each student’s first six AP exams when the student is enrolled in the corresponding FCPS course for high school credit.
