A powerful microburst packing estimated peak winds of 90 mph tore through Burke on Monday, June 22, damaging homes, uprooting trees and leaving hundreds of Fairfax County customers without electricity.

The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday that the destructive storm was a microburst, not a tornado. The concentrated downburst struck about a mile northwest of Burke shortly after 5 p.m., carving a path approximately one mile long and as wide as 500 yards through communities around Lake Royal.

Despite substantial property damage, no storm-related injuries were reported.

More than 1,400 Fairfax County homes and businesses remained without power as of 11 a.m. Tuesday. About 700 affected customers were in Burke, Springfield and Fairfax, south of George Mason University’s campus.

One outage near Guinea Road and Zion Drive in Kings Park West affected 367 customers. The cause remained under investigation, though Fairfax County police had reported downed wires and trees in the area around 6:30 p.m. Monday. Guinea Road was subsequently closed for utility work.

Another outage near Braddock Road left 271 customers without power. Crews were assessing the damage, with restoration estimated between 4 and 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Other outages affecting at least 100 customers each were reported in West Falls Church, McLean and Reston’s Barton Hill area.

The Providence Rec Center also closed because of an outage. All activities, classes and camps scheduled there for the rest of Tuesday were canceled.

Storm causes widespread damage

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews responded to 30 incidents in two hours Monday evening within the Braddock District, which includes Burke and sustained the storm’s heaviest damage.

Multiple single-family houses and townhomes suffered substantial damage. Firefighters secured utilities and helped clear fallen trees and electrical wires.

The storm also smashed a bus shelter and broke a streetlight near Burke Road and Peppercorn Drive. Elsewhere, trees and branches fell onto roads, cars, power lines and homes.

Dominion Energy initially described winds in Burke as reaching about 75 mph and suggested the damage resulted from a localized microburst. The National Weather Service’s later survey placed the maximum winds even higher, at an estimated 90 mph.

Radar observations showed downburst signatures over Burke but no evidence of the rotation associated with a tornado.

A microburst occurs when a strong column of descending air plunges from a thunderstorm and spreads outward after hitting the ground. The resulting straight-line winds can cause damage comparable to that of a weak EF0 or EF1 tornado.

Lake Royal communities take the hardest hit

Surveyors found that concentrated damage began along Zion Road between Guinea Drive and Hillard Lake Road. The destruction continued along Bridgewood Drive and Falmead Road toward Lake Royal.

Many trees in that area were snapped midway up their trunks, uprooted or stripped of large branches. Debris struck vehicles, homes, roads and utility lines, with most of the damage pushed east-northeast in the storm’s direction of travel.

Winds accelerated as the microburst crossed the relatively open surface of Lake Royal, then slammed into townhomes on the eastern shore. Significant portions of several roofs facing the lake were lifted away.

Along Guinea Drive on the lake’s southern side, trees fell across the road and power lines. A business park building also sustained damage after part of its roof was briefly lifted.

Heavy tree damage continued east of Lake Royal along Lakepoint Drive, west of Guinea Road. Trees and branches again landed on cars and houses, while fences were knocked down at numerous townhomes.

Damage became more isolated east of Guinea Road. Farther away, several trees fell near Burke Road and Peppercorn Drive, including one that struck the bus shelter and streetlight.

Fort Belvoir recorded just over an inch of rain between 6 and 8 p.m. Monday. Rain continued Tuesday, though it was not yet clear whether the precipitation would provide meaningful relief from the region’s ongoing drought.
