A powerful microburst packing 90 mph winds struck Burke during severe storms Monday evening, June 22. National Weather Service teams surveyed the damage Tuesday and determined that the burst stretched about one mile long and 500 feet wide. The storm knocked down trees and damaged property, including a fence hit by a falling tree.
In Annandale, Fairfax County police arrested a suspect accused of exposing his genitals before attempting to grab a woman and pull her into the woods. Police said the suspect was in custody and there was no continuing threat to the community.
Military aircraft will fly near the National Mall from Wednesday, June 24, through Friday, July 10, for events marking America’s 250th anniversary. The flyovers coincide with the Great American State Fair, a 16-day exposition organized by Freedom 250 and scheduled for June 25 through July 10.
The ACLU filed a motion June 18 seeking faster relief for thousands of Virginians with certain past felony convictions who remain unable to complete voter registration. The civil rights group accused election officials of violating the outcome of a voting-rights lawsuit decided earlier this year.
Virginia’s Department of Social Services has halted a two-year information technology project intended to replace the state’s aging child-support enforcement system. Millions of dollars had already been spent on the effort. Officials must now determine what to do with a system that was considered antiquated as far back as 1998.
