Portions of the long-awaited Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie appeared on X on April 12, 2026, revealing new characters and story details months before its expected Paramount+ debut.
The film had been in production for four to five years and wrapped in March 2026. Leaked material introduced Tagah, an ancient Airbender, and Gorillavark, a spirit featured in the movie.
In the story, Team Avatar discovers that Tagah survived after being frozen and preserved in ice, much like Aang. The group then joins him on a search for an airbending staff that could help restore the Air Nomads.
Paramount Pictures initially scheduled the movie for a theatrical release on Oct. 10, 2025. After repeated delays, however, the theatrical plans were canceled, and the film was moved to Paramount+, where it is expected around October 2026.
Some fans responded positively to the early footage, but members of the production team said the leak diminished a moment they had spent years working toward.
Animator Julia Schoel said the crew had expected to celebrate its work in theaters, only to see shots from the film circulated online without ceremony. Schoel, artist Thomas Barkel and other crew members described the leak as disrespectful and urged viewers to wait for the official release in support of the artists and staff.
Authorities arrested a 26-year-old man in Singapore on April 24 in connection with the leak. He was accused of accessing a media server without authorization and, if convicted, could face as many as seven years in prison or a fine of up to $50,000.
Sophomore Ella Xu said she was initially disappointed by the cancellation of the theatrical release and did not object to seeing the movie online early. Her view changed after she considered the years of work invested by the people making the film and how the footage had been distributed before they were ready.
The leak has offered audiences an unauthorized preview of Aang’s expanding world, but the production team is asking fans to hold off and watch the completed movie when it officially arrives on Paramount+.
