Northern Virginia enters the first Friday of 2025 with a proposed safeguard for political advertising, a million-dollar lottery winner in Herndon and several community events on the calendar.

Virginia Sen. Scott Surovell, a Fairfax County Democrat, has pre-filed legislation that would require political advertisements to disclose the use of artificial intelligence. AI-generated content can distort reality and mislead voters, as demonstrated by deepfake robocalls in New Hampshire that sounded like President Joe Biden.

Del. Holly Seibold will preview the upcoming General Assembly session at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Patrick Henry Library in Vienna. Seibold represents Virginia’s 12th House District, which includes Vienna, Tysons and neighboring areas of Fairfax County. The county’s General Assembly delegation will also hold a public hearing at 9 a.m.

Rep. Jennifer Wexton is retiring from the U.S. House after serving since 2019, but she continues using her public platform to raise awareness of progressive supranuclear palsy, or PSP. She has also worked to advance legislation supporting potential treatments for PSP and other brain disorders.

A ticket purchased at McNair Farms Sunoco, 13470 Coppermine Road in Herndon, was among five $1 million winners in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle. Two of the winning tickets were sold in Northern Virginia.

Saravanaa Bhavan, a restaurant chain specializing in vegetarian dishes from southern India, appears headed to Chantilly. The business has taken approximately 4,800 square feet at the Chantilly Crossing shopping center.

Community volunteers can help package 18,000 servings of fortified oatmeal on Jan. 4. The Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads, Arlington Moose Lodge and Bailey’s Crossroads Lions Club organized the effort to assist low-income residents during the winter.

The year ahead will also bring the return of giant pandas, Kings Dominion’s 50th anniversary and numerous attraction and business openings across Northern Virginia.

Rain and snow showers are possible after 1 p.m. Friday under mostly cloudy skies. The high will be near 42 degrees, with southwest winds of 5 to 11 mph and gusts reaching 18 mph. The chance of precipitation is 50%.

Snow showers remain possible before 10 p.m., with a 20% chance of precipitation. Skies should then become mostly clear as temperatures fall to around 25 degrees.
