Flu activity in Alexandria has reached very high levels, prompting local health officials to urge residents to take extra precautions.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show that flu-related emergency department visits are very high in Alexandria. Across Northern Virginia, the percentage of emergency visits resulting in a flu diagnosis is more than three times higher than at the same point last year.

The Alexandria Health Department says residents can still get a flu vaccine if they have not already done so.

Officials also recommend washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based sanitizer when soap is unavailable. People should cough or sneeze into their inner elbow, consider wearing a mask to limit airborne germs, and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and handrails.

Anyone who feels sick should stay home and consider postponing gatherings involving others who are ill. People should remain home until they feel better and have been free of fever for at least 24 hours.

Additional information about flu and other respiratory illnesses is available through the health department’s Flu Season website.
