Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins sought to reassure residents amid growing fear and confusion about immigration enforcement across the country and in nearby jurisdictions, emphasizing that the city remains committed to supporting and respecting everyone who calls Alexandria home.
Federal officers may conduct enforcement actions within the city, but Alexandria does not participate in federal immigration enforcement. City police officers, deputy sheriffs and fire marshals do not take part in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids or arrests carried out to enforce immigration laws.
Gaskins said Alexandria will continue complying with federal and state law while protecting the civil and constitutional rights of all people, regardless of immigration status. She expressed confidence that local law enforcement officers will perform their duties with integrity and follow the law.

Gaskins said city officials will continue working with residents and sharing information in the days ahead, while governing according to facts and Alexandria’s values as a welcoming community.
