Alexandria is seeking a new poet laureate to champion poetry, encourage creative writing and reading, and promote literacy across the city.
The selected poet will serve a three-year term and receive a modest annual honorarium. Eight people have previously held the ceremonial position, contributing work for historic occasions, groundbreakings, public dedications, parades, annual celebrations and cultural events.
The poet laureate also brings poetry into Alexandria’s schools and libraries, connects with the city’s diverse communities, and may offer words of reflection, inspiration and healing during difficult times.
Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else. Nominees must be at least 21 years old and have lived in Alexandria for a minimum of one year. They must remain city residents throughout the three-year term and have a distinguished body of poetic work.
The role requires presenting material suitable for audiences of all ages.
Online applications are due Jan. 10, 2025.
