Julio Quintanilla, a 61-year-old Alexandria resident, died from injuries sustained when a car struck him on Richmond Highway in Hybla Valley, according to Fairfax County police and reporting by WTOP.

The collision occurred at approximately 8:06 p.m. July 3 in the 7900 block of Richmond Highway. Police said Quintanilla was crossing the highway when he was struck by a southbound 2025 Toyota Corolla.

Quintanilla was taken to a hospital with injuries that authorities initially believed were not life-threatening. The Medical Examiner’s Office notified police on July 18 that he had died, and WTOP reported that the office attributed his death to injuries from the collision.

Authorities have not provided the precise date on which Quintanilla died.

The Corolla’s driver remained at the scene and was not injured, police said. Police also said Quintanilla had been crossing outside a crosswalk and received a citation.

“Preliminarily, alcohol appears to be a factor for the pedestrian,” the Fairfax County Police Department said. That assessment was preliminary, and the available reports do not include a final toxicology finding.

The crash came during a summer in which other pedestrians were killed along Richmond Highway. Another fatal pedestrian collision occurred at Richmond Highway and Dart Drive on July 2, one day before Quintanilla was struck. A pedestrian also died near Richmond Highway and Fort Hunt Road in mid-June.

The roadway has also been the subject of a Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets analysis. The group examined a 14-mile stretch of Richmond Highway running from the Alexandria border to the Occoquan River south of Lorton.
