Alexandria voters will return to the polls Aug. 4 for a dual primary covering congressional and statewide races. Virginia’s open-primary system allows voters to select either a Democratic or Republican ballot—but not both.

Early in-person voting begins Thursday, June 18, one day earlier than initially scheduled because of the statewide observance of Juneteenth on Friday, June 19. Voters must show an acceptable form of identification, such as a Virginia driver’s license or U.S. passport, or sign an ID confirmation statement.

Alexandria lies entirely within Virginia’s 8th Congressional District.

Early-voting locations and hours

Early voting runs through Saturday, Aug. 1. The primary location is the Office of Voter Registration & Elections at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100. Regular weekday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., although the office will be closed June 19 and July 3.

The Royal Street office will offer additional hours on these dates:

  • Sunday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 25, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 1, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A satellite voting site at Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library, 5005 Duke St., will open on four dates:

  • Sunday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The deadline to register to vote or request a mail-in ballot is 5 p.m. July 24. Voters who miss the registration deadline may use same-day provisional registration.

On Election Day, voters must cast ballots at their assigned precincts. Polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Contested races on the ballots

Only races with more than one candidate will appear in the primaries.

The Democratic contest for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District is a five-way race featuring incumbent Donald S. Beyer Jr., Mo Seifeldein, Michael Christian Duffin, Adam M. Dunigan and Lorena Thorne Bruner. Republicans are not holding a primary for the seat.

The statewide Republican primary for U.S. Senate includes Bert Mizusawa, Kim Farington and David E. Williams. Democrats are not holding a Senate primary.

Voters can check their registration and locate their assigned polling place through the Virginia Department of Elections website.

Mail-ballot rules and deadlines

Any registered voter may request a mail-in ballot, but the application must identify which party’s ballot the voter wants. Requests must arrive by 5 p.m. July 24.

Completed ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 4 and received by noon Aug. 7.

A secure drop box is available around the clock outside the Office of Voter Registration & Elections. Drop boxes will also be offered at early-voting sites during operating hours and at every Election Day polling place until 7 p.m.
