Hundreds bundled against chilly weather on Nov. 22 to welcome Santa and celebrate Alexandria’s annual Christmas tree lighting in Market Square.
The signature gathering marked the city’s final tree-lighting celebration at Market Square before renovations to City Hall begin in January. The work is expected to continue through 2028.
“This is going to be our last celebration at City Hall and Market Square while we undergo renovations,” Mayor Alyia Gaskins told the crowd.
Town Crier Ben Fiore-Walker welcomed attendees as Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived aboard the King Street Trolley. Gaskins and City Council members then joined Santa to lead the countdown.
Cheers erupted as the city illuminated its towering 40-foot artificial tree, decorated with 38,000 lights. The celebration continued with holiday carols, a live performance by Steffenworx Brass and opportunities to take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
The lighting opened a series of holiday events across Alexandria. The 54th annual Scottish Walk Parade and the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on the Potomac River are scheduled for Dec. 6.
The Del Ray Tree and Menorah Lighting will follow on Dec. 7 at Pat Miller Neighborhood Square in Del Ray.
