Halloween celebrations are taking over Alexandria as a charitable pumpkin patch marks its 32nd year and Del Ray prepares for the return of its popular costume parade.

The Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill Pumpkin Patch is open daily through Oct. 31. The monthlong fundraiser, billed as the region’s largest pumpkin patch, benefits organizations that feed, house, educate and care for vulnerable communities.

Visitors can shop for pumpkins and gourds along with homemade soups, baked goods and autumn- and Halloween-themed crafts. All profits support more than 25 charities locally, nationally and internationally.

Alexandria beneficiaries include Carpenters Shelter, ALIVE!, Senior Services of Alexandria, Community Lodgings, and Child and Family Network Centers.

The pumpkins are grown on the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico and distributed on consignment to Immanuel and more than 1,300 churches of various denominations nationwide. The partnerships support over 300 jobs on the reservation while raising money for participating churches’ programs.

Del Ray’s 29th Annual Halloween Parade will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, along Mount Vernon Avenue. Children, pets and decorated strollers are welcome to join the procession and display their costumes.

The parade concludes at the Mount Vernon Rec Center field with live music and an awards presentation. USA Today has previously named the event one of the country’s 10 best Halloween parades.

Halloween also extends indoors at Nightmare on the Avenue, the seasonal edition of Del Ray’s rotating pop-up bar at 2312 Mount Vernon Avenue. Skeletons, gravestones and other eerie decorations set the scene, while themed menu items include bat wings and a Death Eater Negroni.

The pop-up remains open through Nov. 2.
