Fairfax County could see at least 5 inches of snow as another winter storm approaches the D.C. region, though forecasters cautioned Saturday that the storm’s path and snowfall totals remained uncertain.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch from 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, through 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23. Snow and ice from the region’s previous storm had only recently mostly cleared.
As of 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the forecast showed a 100% chance of precipitation Sunday. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph, and slippery roads could disrupt the Monday morning commute.
The weather service said some places covered by the watch could ultimately receive a less-severe Winter Weather Advisory instead of a Winter Storm Warning. A projection issued shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday called for roughly 3 inches of snow in Washington, with higher totals more likely farther north in Maryland.
The storm is expected to have its greatest impact in New Jersey and New England. Heavy snow and high winds could produce blizzard conditions, particularly from New Jersey into southeastern New England, with coastal areas likely to face the highest snowfall totals and strongest gusts.
Residents were advised to monitor updated forecasts as the storm develops.
