The rector of the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More in Arlington has been placed on administrative leave while authorities investigate an allegation of sexual misconduct involving minors, the Catholic Diocese of Arlington said.
The allegation against the Rev. Patrick Posey concerns conduct that allegedly occurred between 1992 and 1993, before he arrived in the Arlington diocese in 1999. The alleged conduct took place outside the diocese.
Posey denies the accusation, and officials said no determination has been made about whether the allegation is valid.
The diocese said it promptly reported the allegation to law enforcement in accordance with its policy and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
Posey has undergone regular criminal background checks during his service, as required for priests, diocesan employees and volunteers who work with children in the diocese.
Before serving in Arlington, Posey held local assignments in Winchester, Purcellville and Falls Church, according to online records.
The diocese urged anyone with information about misconduct or abuse involving a cleric or employee to contact police or its victim assistance coordinator at 703-841-2530.
