Arlington’s 55+ Programs will offer a packed schedule of classes, outings, discussions, recreation and social gatherings from April 23 through May 9.

Most activities take place in person at Arlington’s 55+ Centers, although several are virtual. Participation requires a 55+ Pass, available for an annual fee starting at $20. Registration is available at registration.arlingtonva.us or by calling 703-228-4747.

Nature, history and spring outings

Arlington Park Naturalist Aide Leeanna Pletcher will present “A Year in the Life of a Box Turtle” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. Registration number: 913400-15.

A discussion of Arlington’s history begins at 1:30 p.m. April 23 at Lubber Run 55+ Center. Registration number: 913402-08.

The Nature and Pie Walk leaves Walter Reed 55+ Center at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 24. An Arlington Regional Master Naturalist volunteer will lead the 1.5-mile walk through Arlington Village to ACME Pie. Registration number: 913106-31.

A virtual program about Vision Zero, the global effort to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries, begins at 3 p.m. April 24. Nate Graham, a public engagement specialist with the Arlington Transportation Division, will lead the presentation. Registration number: 913400-05.

A plant and cutting swap will run from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 24 at Lubber Run. Participants may trade healthy, pest-free plants and learn about unfamiliar varieties. Registration number: 913401-02.

Nick Englund of the Department of Parks and Recreation will lead a virtual smartphone videography session at 10 a.m. April 24, covering camera features and photography and editing apps. Registration number: 913403-03.

“Explore Flowers and Pollinators” begins at 1 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Lubber Run. Pletcher will help participants identify common butterflies and exchange gardening advice. Registration number: 913400-16.

The 55+ Travel group will visit the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival on Saturday, April 26. The event brings together gardeners, artisans and plant enthusiasts. The trip costs $12 for Arlington residents and $14 for nonresidents. Registration number: 902504-10.

A Gulf Branch Stream Hike starts at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Gulf Branch Nature Center. Arlington Park Naturalist Gabby Hrycyshyn will discuss park plants and animals along a route with uneven ground and several hills. Registration number: 913106-33.

Sales, books and creative programs

Aurora Hills will hold its annual Trash and Treasure Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Shoppers can browse decorative objects, small appliances, toys, games, jewelry and craft supplies. Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, and Friday, April 25. The Aurora Hills Book Club will discuss Eleanor Catton’s “Birnam Wood” at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 28. No registration is required.

Aurora Hills’ Yarn Crafters meet from 10 a.m. to noon April 28 for conversation and the creation of knitted and crocheted items for Arlington charities. Supplies and instruction are available, and participants may drop in.

Michiko Oyama of Shirlington Branch Public Library will lead an Audiobook Club discussion of “What You Are Looking for is in the Library” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Arlington Mill 55+ Center. Registration number: 913402-20.

A cardmaking workshop for beginners runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Langston-Brown 55+ Center. Participants should bring a pencil, ruler, scissors, glue sticks and a black stamping ink pad. The workshop is drop-in.

Arlington Spellbinders, whose members tell stories at schools, senior centers and other locations, will gather at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, at Langston-Brown. Drop-ins are welcome.

Langston-Brown’s book club will discuss Woody Holton’s “Abigail Adams” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6. The meeting is drop-in.

A beginner quilling class at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Lubber Run will teach participants to make raised designs from coiled paper strips. Joni Leonardo will lead the $18 class. Registration number: 913310-03.

Games, dancing and social gatherings

Coffee or Tea and Thee brings participants together at Lubber Run from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays. The social hour is drop-in.

Participants can learn line-dancing basics from volunteer Hanni Cordes at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Walter Reed. A separate beginner class led by volunteer Suzie Pratts meets Fridays at Aurora Hills and covers the box step, quarter turn and grapevine. Both programs are drop-in.

A virtual trivia challenge begins at 11 a.m. May 1. Registration number: 913600-14.

Cribbage is offered from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays at Walter Reed. Beginners are welcome to drop in and learn the card game.

Lubber Run will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Springo from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, May 5. The event includes music, Bingo/Loteria and small prizes. Registration number: 913899-07.

An evening Bunco session runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Walter Reed. No experience is necessary. Registration number: 913600-11.

Billiards is available from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at Walter Reed and during the same hours Tuesdays and Thursdays at Arlington Mill. Both are drop-in activities.

Music and cultural events

An Old Time and String Band Jam begins at 5 p.m. May 1 at Lubber Run. Players of Appalachian old-time, pre-bluegrass and string-band music may bring banjos, guitars, fiddles, mandolins and dulcimers. Registration number: 913304-19.

Just Play’n Country meets from 1 to 3 p.m. May 2 at Madison Community Center. Visitors may bring an instrument, sing along or listen. The gathering is drop-in.

Volunteer Sandy O’Shea will teach an introduction to the ukulele at 4 p.m. May 6 at Walter Reed. Registration number: 913304-05.

A music appreciation group will explore Ray Charles’ work at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Aurora Hills. Cory Cox, a 55+ operations supervisor, will present. Registration number: 913400-38.

Lubber Run’s opera appreciation group will watch a video of Hector Berlioz’s rarely performed epic “Les Troyens,” based on Virgil’s “Aeneid,” at 1:30 p.m. May 7. George Cecchetti will provide professional commentary. Registration number: 913300-05.

Off Our Rockers will hold an open rehearsal from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 at Madison Community Center, performing music from the 1950s through the 1970s. Drop-ins are welcome.

Ashley Gomez, director of Lubber Run 55+ Center, will lead a virtual exploration of Gibraltar and the Spanish language’s distinctive presence and cultural influence there at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8. Registration number: 913400-26.

Aurora Hills will host Mother’s Day Music and Tea at 1 p.m. May 9. Pianist Valerie Welsh will perform, and pastries and sweets will be served. Participants may bring a photograph of their mother, wife or children for display. Registration number: 913899-08.

Fitness and recreation

Dr. Gregory Cardinal of Podiatrists in Motion will discuss foot health, hygiene and treatments at 11 a.m. April 29 at Langston-Brown. Registration number: 913500-08.

Volleyball for all skill levels is available from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Langston-Brown and from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at Lubber Run. The May 6 Langston-Brown session also runs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. All sessions are drop-in.

Water walking and lap swimming are available at Long Bridge Aquatics Center, 333 Long Bridge Drive, from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. No instruction is provided. Participants must have a center membership or pay the daily admission fee.

Volunteer-led Tai Chi practice takes place from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays at Aurora Hills and from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Walter Reed. These drop-in practices do not include instruction.

Senior public skating is offered from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, with roof-level parking at Ballston Quarter. Skate rental costs $1. Advance registration is required through the Senior Public Skate section of the iceplex website.

Pickleball is available at Walter Reed from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 2:15 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Arlington Mill offers it from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. A 55+ Pass is required, but no separate registration is needed.

Women’s drop-in basketball meets from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays at Langston-Brown.
