Arlington’s 55+ centers are offering a packed schedule of fitness, arts, games, educational programs and regional excursions through early June.

Most activities take place in person and require a 55+ Pass, which starts at $20 annually. Participants can register at registration.arlingtonva.us or call 703-228-4747. Programs identified as drop-ins do not require advance registration.

Recurring fitness, games and social activities

Coffee or Tea and Thee meets Mondays and Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at Lubber Run 55+ Center, offering a drop-in opportunity to socialize.

Drop-in volleyball welcomes all skill levels Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Langston-Brown and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lubber Run.

Volunteer Suzie Pratts leads an introductory line-dancing class Fridays at Aurora Hills. Participants can drop in to learn the box step, quarter turn and grapevine.

Cribbage meets Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at Walter Reed. The challenging but accessible card game is open to drop-ins.

Water walking and lap swimming are available Mondays from 8 to 10 a.m. and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Long Bridge Aquatics Center, 333 Long Bridge Drive. No instruction is provided. Participants need a center membership or must pay daily admission.

Experienced volunteers host drop-in Tai Chi practice, without instruction, Mondays from 2 to 2:45 p.m. at Aurora Hills and Tuesdays and Fridays from 1 to 2:15 p.m. at Walter Reed.

The weekly 55+ ice-skating session runs Mondays from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, accessible through the roof-level parking area at Ballston Quarter. Skate rentals cost $1. Advance registration is required through the iceplex’s Senior Public Skate page.

Pickleball is available with a 55+ Pass at Walter Reed on Mondays and Fridays from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays from 2:15 to 4 p.m. Arlington Mill offers pickleball Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. All sessions are drop-in.

Women’s drop-in basketball takes place Wednesdays from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. at Langston-Brown.

Late-May highlights

On Wednesday, May 21, an opera appreciation group will explore Hector Berlioz’s rarely performed epic “Les Troyens,” based on Virgil’s “The Aeneid.” George Cecchetti will provide professional commentary at 1:30 p.m. at Lubber Run. Registration is #913300-06.

Pianist Valerie Welsh will lead a singalong featuring songs from the late 1960s at 4 p.m. May 21 at Lubber Run. Lyrics will be provided. Registration is #913304-25.

Eurogames, which emphasize strategy, skill and player interaction over luck and conflict, begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at Walter Reed. Beginners are welcome. Registration is #913600-07.

Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer tips for controlling clutter at 10 a.m. May 22 at Arlington Mill. Registration is #913400-07.

Singing actresses Judy Lewis and Jane Petrovsky will present another hour of Stephen Sondheim’s music at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Lubber Run. Pianist Ken Schellenberg and cellist Deborah Larson will accompany them. Registration is #913301-06.

Lubber Run will also screen the 2011 PG-13 film “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” at 1 p.m. May 27. Registration is #913804-03.

A music appreciation program at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, will examine Selena Quintanilla’s blend of Tejano, pop and cumbia and its impact on Latin music. Cory Cox, a 55+ operations supervisor, will present the program at Aurora Hills. Registration is #913400-39.

A discussion recalling Arlington’s history is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. May 28 at Lubber Run. Registration is #913402-09.

The 55+ Fitness Day and Health Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 28 at Lubber Run. The drop-in event includes health screenings, fall-risk assessments, fitness-class demonstrations and questions and answers with dietitians. It is open to all ages, and no 55+ Pass is required. Sponsors include Arlington County’s 55+ Program, Marymount University, Virginia Hospital Center and Arlington Neighborhood Village.

Also on May 28, the 55+ Travel group will visit Chanticleer Garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where foliage takes center stage, gardeners guide the design and even the drinking fountains are sculptural. Participants should bring lunch for a garden picnic. The trip costs $108 for Arlington residents and $124 for nonresidents. Registration is #902505-09.

A puzzle exchange at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at Lubber Run will let participants trade and discuss new or gently used jigsaw puzzles. Registration is #913801-05.

Avid cyclist David Young will recount his ride from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., and his exploration of historic transportation infrastructure during the virtual “Pedaling for a Purpose” program at 3 p.m. May 29. Registration is #913400-22.

Volunteers from Arlington Regional Master Naturalists and the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance will track spring migration in real time and explain how residents can support migratory birds at 1 p.m. May 29 at Arlington Mill. Registration is #913400-19.

A Decades Dance Party celebrating Older Americans Month will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, at Arlington Mill. Guests can dress for a favorite decade and dance to music from different eras and genres. The event is open to all ages without a 55+ Pass. Registration is #913899-09.

Aurora Hills will screen the 2023 R-rated movie “The Hitman” at 12:30 p.m. May 30. Registration is #913804-06.

June begins with arts, exercise and community events

A gentle seated video-exercise class designed to improve flexibility, strength and circulation will begin at 10:15 a.m. Monday, June 2, at Aurora Hills. The drop-in session uses video instruction and has no in-person instructor.

Art historian Joan Hart will discuss Gustav Klimt’s golden paintings and their place at the height of early-20th-century Viennese art at 1 p.m. June 2 at Aurora Hills. Registration is #914302-01.

Easy piano-duet sessions will meet at 4 p.m. Mondays from June 2 through Aug. 25 at Walter Reed. Participants need basic piano knowledge, and no instruction will be provided. Music will be supplied for home practice. Registration is #914304-13.

Creative Commons, a new space where artists can work on projects at their own pace, will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Lubber Run. Supplies and instruction are not included. Registration is #914303-01.

Volunteer Sandy O’Shea will teach an introductory ukulele session at 4 p.m. June 3 at Walter Reed. No experience is necessary, and a limited number of ukuleles will be available. Registration is #914304-01.

Rockland’s Barbeque, 3471 Washington Blvd., will host a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. June 3. Fifteen percent of proceeds will benefit the Alliance for Senior Programs, which supports Arlington’s 55+ programs. Carryout purchases qualify, vegetarian choices will be available, and games and drawings are planned throughout the day.

The Langston-Brown book club will discuss Kristin Hannah’s “The Women” at 1 p.m. June 3. The meeting is open to drop-ins.

A virtual presentation at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, will explain Medicare Part D changes taking effect under the 2025 Inflation Reduction Act. Manny Adams of Steinlage Insurance will lead the session. Registration is #914503-01.

Pride Dance Bingo, combining cardio dancing with bingo, starts at 1 p.m. June 5 at Walter Reed. Registration is #914802-01.

An Old-Time and String Band Jam begins at 5 p.m. June 5 at Lubber Run. Musicians of all abilities can bring guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins and dulcimers for an open session of Appalachian old-time, pre-bluegrass and string-band music. Registration is #914304-14.

The 55+ Travel group will visit Tea with Mrs. B in Falls Church on Friday, June 6, for teas and treats. The trip costs $86 for Arlington residents and $99 for nonresidents. Registration is #902506-01.

A Senior Housing Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6 at Lubber Run, with information about affordable housing, home modifications and other resources. The drop-in fair is open to all ages and does not require a 55+ Pass.

The Arlington Spellbinders, a group devoted to oral storytelling, will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 6 at Langston-Brown. Newcomers may drop in.

On Saturday, June 7, the 55+ Travel group will head to Annapolis for a Secret Garden tour featuring hidden gardens along the historic city’s streets. The outing costs $65 for Arlington residents and $75 for nonresidents. Registration is #902506-02.
