Arlington’s 55+ Programs are offering a full schedule of social gatherings, fitness activities, cultural programs, classes and regional excursions in June.

Most activities take place in person at Arlington’s 55+ Centers. Participation generally requires a 55+ Pass, with annual fees starting at $25. Registration is available at registration.arlingtonva.us or by calling 703-228-4747.

Weekly drop-in activities

Coffee or Tea and Thee offers time to socialize at Lubber Run 55+ Center from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

Volleyball for all skill levels meets from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Langston-Brown 55+ Center and from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at Lubber Run.

Volunteer Suzie Pratts leads an introductory line-dancing class Fridays at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. Beginners can learn the box step, quarter turn and grapevine.

Cribbage is played from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays at Walter Reed 55+ Center. New players are welcome to learn the card game.

Water walking and lap swimming are available at Long Bridge Aquatics Center, 333 Long Bridge Drive, from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. The sessions do not include instruction. Participants need an aquatics center membership or must pay the daily admission fee.

Volunteer-led Tai Chi practice sessions are held from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays at Aurora Hills and from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Walter Reed. No instruction is provided.

Senior public skating runs from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, accessible through roof-level parking at Ballston Quarter. Skate rental costs $1. Advance registration is required through the Senior Public Skate section of medstarcapitalsiceplex.com.

Pickleball is available at Walter Reed from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 2:15 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Arlington Mill offers pickleball from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. A 55+ Pass is required.

Women’s drop-in basketball takes place from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays at Langston-Brown.

Special programs and outings

Opera enthusiasts can watch and discuss Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Lubber Run. George Cecchetti will provide professional commentary during the Metropolitan Opera on Demand presentation. Registration is #914300-01.

A virtual trivia challenge is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5. Registration is #914600-13.

Langston-Brown will hold a fitness-equipment orientation at 1:30 p.m. June 5, teaching participants how to use the center’s machines properly. Registration is #914100-19.

Pride Dance Bingo, which combines cardio dancing with bingo, begins at 1 p.m. June 5 at Walter Reed. Registration is #914802-01.

Musicians of every skill level can bring guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins and dulcimers to an old-time and string-band jam at 5 p.m. June 5 at Lubber Run. The session will focus on Appalachian old-time, pre-bluegrass and string-band music. Registration is #914304-14.

The 55+ Travel group will visit Tea with Mrs. B in Falls Church on Friday, June 6. The outing costs $86 for Arlington residents and $99 for nonresidents. Registration is #902506-01.

A Senior Housing Fair will cover affordable housing, home modifications and other resources from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6 at Lubber Run. The drop-in event is open to all ages, and no 55+ Pass is required.

The Arlington Spellbinders, an oral-storytelling group, will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 6 at Langston-Brown. Newcomers may drop in.

A June 7 Secret Garden tour will take the travel group through tucked-away gardens along Annapolis’ historic streets. The trip costs $65 for Arlington residents and $75 for nonresidents. Registration is #902506-02.

Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Food Volunteers will present a food-safety and side-dish cooking demonstration at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 9, at Walter Reed. Registration is #914501-01.

Scale Down, a weight-loss support group featuring private weigh-ins and programs, meets at 1:30 p.m. June 9 and June 23 at Langston-Brown. Both sessions are drop-in.

Matthew Quinn of Quinn’s Action Galleries will explain how to sort family treasures and navigate estate sales and auctions at 1:30 p.m. June 9 at Langston-Brown. Registration for “Keep the Best and Get Rid of the Rest” is #914400-08.

Certified coach and facilitator Sallie Wiley will lead “Navigating Change and Uncertainty” at 1 p.m. June 9 at Lubber Run. The program focuses on making sound choices and identifying new opportunities. Registration is #914400-09.

Art historian Joan Hart will discuss the Group of Seven and its striking Canadian landscapes at 1 p.m. June 9 at Aurora Hills. Registration for the Canadian visionary artists presentation is #914302-02.

The travel group will cruise across the Chesapeake Bay to St. Michaels on June 9. The $120 resident and $138 nonresident prices include admission to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Participants will explore the historic village, shops and other sites, with meals purchased separately. Registration is #902506-13.

Jessica Kaplan, editor of the Arlington Historical Society Magazine, will present a program about memorializing enslaved people in Arlington’s history at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at Arlington Mill. Registration is #914400-16.

Genealogist Eileen Bogdanoff will introduce primary-source research, including the use of Ancestry.com, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10 at Lubber Run. Registration for Genealogy 101 is #914402-01.

An Arlington County librarian will highlight beach-themed fiction and nonfiction at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Aurora Hills. Registration for “To the Beach With Books” is #914400-24.

History roundtable participants will meet virtually at 11:15 a.m. June 11 to discuss the historical impact of insects and diseases. Registration is #914402-04.

A program exploring the history of English and language more broadly begins at 10:30 a.m. June 11. Participants may attend at Lubber Run under registration #914402-12 or join virtually under #914402-13.

The travel group will take an LGBTQ+ walking tour of the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., on June 11. The outing is not ADA compliant and costs $21 for Arlington residents and $24 for nonresidents. Registration is #902506-04.

Ashley Gomez, director of Lubber Run 55+ Center, will begin a virtual tour of Spanish-speaking South America with Uruguay and Paraguay at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 12. Registration is #914400-28.

A beginner quilling class at 1:30 p.m. June 12 at Lubber Run will teach participants to create raised images from coiled, one-eighth-inch-wide paper strips. Supplies are included in the $18 fee. Registration is #914310-01.

Karaoke Night starts at 6 p.m. June 12 at Lubber Run. Registration is #914304-20.

Walter Reed will introduce a drop-in Spades gathering at 1 p.m. Friday, June 13. Beginners are welcome to learn the partnership-based trick-taking card game.
