Arlington’s 55+ spring schedule offers activities ranging from concerts and environmental programs to swimming, pickleball and day trips. Most programs take place at 55+ Centers and require a 55+ Pass, available for an annual fee starting at $20. Registration is available by calling 703-228-4747.

Events Through April 25

Ashley Gomez, director of the Lubber Run 55+ Center, will lead a virtual exploration of Andorra—the sixth-smallest country in Europe—at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 17. Registration number: 913304-25.

Volunteer Suzie Pratts will host partner-free line dancing practice at 11:05 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. The session is drop-in.

A virtual painting demonstration with a Community Arts Programmer begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 21. Participants will receive a picture and supply list before class. Registration number: 913303-04.

Gomez will also hold an open office hour at Lubber Run at 1:30 p.m. April 21. Participants may ask questions, discuss current offerings and suggest new programs. Registration number: 913801-02.

A community cleanup at Quincy Park, 1021 N. Quincy St., runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Supplies will be provided. The event is open to all ages, and no 55+ Pass is required. Registration number: 913899-06.

Michelle Atkin, MPH, will discuss landfills, electronic waste, plastic-bag overuse and the history of environmental destruction at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Arlington Mill 55+ Center. Registration number: 913400-14.

Lubber Run will screen the PG-13 film “Saving Mr. Banks” at 1 p.m. April 22. Registration number: 913804-02.

Local musicians Sherry Hickey and Judy McVerry, accompanied by pianist Ken Schellenberg, will perform 1960s folk-rock favorites in “The Best of Simon and Garfunkel.” Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. April 22 at Langston-Brown 55+ Center, registration number 913304-27, and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Lubber Run, registration number 913304-28.

The 55+ Travel group will attend “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Riverside Center for the Performing Arts in Fredericksburg on Wednesday, April 23. The trip, including lunch, costs $105 for Arlington residents and $121 for nonresidents. Registration number: 902504-07.

Arlington Park Naturalist Aide Leeanna Pletcher will present “A Year in the Life of a Box Turtle” at 1 p.m. April 23 at Aurora Hills. Registration number: 913400-15.

A discussion of Arlington’s history begins at 1:30 p.m. April 23 at Lubber Run. Registration number: 913402-08.

Walter Reed 55+ Center will host a 1.5-mile Nature and Pie Walk through Arlington Village to the ACME Pie shop at 1 p.m. April 24. An Arlington Regional Master Naturalist volunteer will lead the walk. Registration number: 913106-31.

Nate Graham, a public engagement specialist with the Arlington Transportation Division, will explain Vision Zero’s effort to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries during a virtual program at 3 p.m. April 24. Registration number: 913400-05.

A plant and cutting swap runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 24 at Lubber Run. Participants should bring healthy, pest-free plants to trade. Registration number: 913401-02.

Nick Englund of the Department of Parks and Recreation will offer a virtual smartphone videography session at 10 a.m. April 24, covering camera features and photography and editing apps. Registration number: 913403-03.

Pletcher will return for a program on flowers and pollinators at 1 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Lubber Run. The session includes common butterfly identification and gardening tips. Registration number: 913400-16.

Sales, Trips and Clubs

The 55+ Travel group will visit the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival on Saturday, April 26. The gathering brings together gardeners, artisans and plant enthusiasts. Admission costs $12 for Arlington residents and $14 for nonresidents. Registration number: 902504-10.

Aurora Hills will hold its annual Trash and Treasure Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26. Merchandise will include decorative items, small appliances, games, toys, jewelry and craft supplies. Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, and Friday, April 25. The sale is drop-in; additional information is available at 703-228-5722.

Coffee or Tea and Thee provides time to socialize at Lubber Run from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays. No registration is required.

The Aurora Hills Book Club will discuss Eleanor Catton’s “Birnam Wood” at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 28. The meeting is drop-in.

Yarn Crafters will meet at Aurora Hills from 10 a.m. to noon April 28 to knit and crochet items for Arlington charities. Supplies and instruction will be available, and participants may drop in.

Michiko Oyama of Shirlington Branch Public Library will lead an Audiobook Club discussion of “What You Are Looking for Is in the Library” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Arlington Mill. Registration number: 913402-20.

Podiatrist Dr. Gregory Cardinal of Podiatrists in Motion will discuss foot health, hygiene and treatments at 11 a.m. April 29 at Langston-Brown. Registration number: 913500-08.

Volunteer Hanni Cordes will teach basic line dancing at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Walter Reed. The program is drop-in.

A beginner-friendly cardmaking workshop runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Langston-Brown. Participants should bring a pencil, ruler, scissors, glue sticks and a black stamping ink pad. No registration is required.

A virtual trivia challenge begins at 11 a.m. May 1. Registration number: 913600-14.

Lubber Run will host an Old Time and String Band Jam at 5 p.m. May 1. Musicians may bring banjos, guitars, fiddles, mandolins and dulcimers to play Appalachian old-time, pre-bluegrass and string-band music. Registration number: 913304-19.

Pratts also leads an introductory line dancing class Fridays at Aurora Hills, teaching moves such as the box step, quarter turn and grapevine. The class is drop-in.

Arlington Spellbinders, whose members tell stories at schools, senior centers and other locations, will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, at Langston-Brown. Participants may drop in.

Just Play’n Country welcomes musicians, singers and listeners from 1 to 3 p.m. May 2 at Madison Community Center. No registration is needed.

Cribbage is available from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays at Walter Reed. Players may drop in, including those new to the card game.

Recurring Fitness Programs

Volleyball for all skill levels is offered from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Langston-Brown and from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at Lubber Run. Both sessions are drop-in.

Water walking and lap swimming take place at Long Bridge Aquatics Center, 333 Long Bridge Drive, from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. No instruction is provided. Participants need a center membership or must pay daily admission.

Volunteer-led Tai Chi practice, without instruction, is available from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays at Aurora Hills and from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Walter Reed. All sessions are drop-in.

Skaters age 55 and older can take the ice from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, with roof-level parking at Ballston Quarter. Skate rental costs $1, and advance registration through the iceplex is required.

Pickleball is available at Walter Reed from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 2:15 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Arlington Mill offers pickleball from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions are drop-in, but a 55+ Pass is required.
