Arlington County’s 55+ program is filling the early-summer calendar with fitness, arts, games, educational sessions and day trips. Most activities take place in person at county 55+ centers and require a 55+ Pass, available for an annual fee starting at $25.
The centers will be closed Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Registration is available at registration.arlingtonva.us or by calling 703-228-4747.
Recurring fitness, games and social activities
Coffee or Tea and Thee offers casual conversation at Lubber Run 55+ Center from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays. No registration is required.
Drop-in volleyball for all skill levels is held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Langston-Brown 55+ Center and from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at Lubber Run.
Volunteer Suzie Pratts leads an introductory line-dancing class Fridays at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. Participants learn fundamentals including the box step, quarter turn and grapevine. The class is drop-in.
Cribbage players can meet from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays at Walter Reed 55+ Center. Beginners are welcome, and no registration is needed.
Water walking and lap swimming are available at Long Bridge Aquatics Center, 333 Long Bridge Drive, from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. The sessions do not include instruction. Participants must have an aquatics center membership or pay the daily admission charge.
Experienced volunteers host drop-in tai chi practice without formal instruction from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays at Aurora Hills and from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Walter Reed.
Senior public skating runs from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, accessible through roof-level parking at Ballston Quarter. Skate rental costs $1. Advance registration is required through the iceplex website by selecting “Senior Public Skate.”
Pickleball is offered at Walter Reed from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 2:15 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Arlington Mill hosts play from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. These are drop-in sessions, but a 55+ Pass is required.
Women’s drop-in basketball takes place from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays at Langston-Brown.
Events from June 18 through June 27
Susan Court will teach bridge to newcomers and returning players from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays, June 18 through July 23, at Aurora Hills. Registration number: 914602-21.
A June 19 trip to see the Washington Nationals play the Colorado Rockies costs $74 for Arlington residents and $85 for nonresidents. Registration number: 902506-07.
Park and Play will combine a relaxing walk with games from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, June 20, at Aurora Hills. The event is open to all ages, and no 55+ Pass is needed. Registration number: 914899-02.
Lubber Run will hold an all-ages Pride Dance Party from 1 to 3 p.m. June 20, featuring LGBTQ+ anthems, celebrated performers and current hits. Registration number: 914899-03.
A community picnic will follow from 5 to 8 p.m. June 20 on the Lubber Run Community Center lawn. Guests should bring their own meals for an evening of music and games celebrating the longest day of the year. Information is available at 55plus@arlingtonva.us.
The 55+ Travel group will attend a June 21 matinee of “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations” at the National Theatre in Washington. The trip costs $159 for Arlington residents and $183 for nonresidents. Registration number: 902506-08.
Career transition counselor and certified coach Sallie Wiley will share strategies for use before, during and after job interviews at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, at Lubber Run. Registration number: 914400-11.

Name That Tune will test participants’ knowledge of pop and rock from the 1950s through the 1970s. Artist Sushmita Mazumdar will teach simple origami and bookmaking as a peaceful creative practice at 6 p.m. Wednesdays from June 25 through July 30 at Arlington Mill. Registration number: 914310-06.

Three virtual programs are set for June 26. At 1 p.m., Dwight Rodgers of Encore Learning will lead a discussion spanning cultural, economic, artistic and political history; registration number 914402-06. Also at 1 p.m., Lubber Run Director Ashley Gomez will begin a virtual tour of Spanish-speaking South America with Colombia; registration number 914400-29. At 3 p.m., Library of Virginia Outreach Specialist Peter North will discuss chancery court records, genealogy and archival preservation; registration number 914400-14.
On June 27, the travel group will visit the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, whose collection includes more than 25,000 artifacts covering 300 years of American law enforcement. Late June and Fourth of July week
A chair-based video exercise session begins at 10:15 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Aurora Hills. The drop-in class follows recorded instructions and is designed to provide a safe way to stay active.
Walter Reed will offer a judgment-free introduction to pickleball at 10 a.m. June 30 for people considering a beginner class. No registration is required.
At 11:30 a.m. June 30, Sallie Wiley will lead a Lubber Run program about turning acquaintances into deeper friendships. Registration number: 914400-12.
