Arlington’s 55+ programs are offering a busy April schedule featuring fitness activities, live music, educational talks, dancing and virtual events.

Most activities take place in person at 55+ centers. Unless otherwise noted, participants need a 55+ Pass, with annual fees starting at $20. Registration is available at registration.arlingtonva.us or by calling 703-228-4747.

An eight-week walking challenge begins Wednesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m. at Arlington Mill 55+ Center and runs through April 21. Participants may walk independently or join a group and will receive a digital journal to track their progress. Registration number: 913106-27.

Genealogist Susan Court will introduce the basics of researching family history at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at Arlington Mill. Registration number: 913400-33.

Several other programs are scheduled for April 3. Steve Cone of Capital Caring Health will discuss and demonstrate robotic pets for people facing dementia or depression at 11 a.m. at Langston-Brown 55+ Center. Registration number: 913400-37.

At 5 p.m., volunteer Fred Winter will host an open old-time and string-band jam at Lubber Run 55+ Center. Participants may bring a banjo, guitar, fiddle or mandolin to play Appalachian old-time, pre-bluegrass and string-band music. Registration number: 913304-17.

Two virtual events are also planned that day. Community Arts Programmer Jennifer Droblyen will examine famous art forgers and how they were caught at 9 a.m. Registration number: 913302-09. Dwight Rodgers of Encore Learning will lead an online history discussion at 1 p.m.

Lubber Run will hold a drop-in social ballroom dance from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 4. No partner is necessary, but instruction will not be provided.

Absolute beginners can try pickleball at 10 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Walter Reed 55+ Center. Volunteers will answer questions, and a limited supply of paddles and balls will be available. The session is drop-in.

Arlington County Department of Environmental Services staff will explain recycling dos and don’ts at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Langston-Brown. Registration number: 913400-09.

Langston-Brown will also host a drop-in drumming circle at 2 p.m. that day, giving participants an opportunity for group music-making and self-expression.

At 7 p.m. April 15, local musicians Sweet Mountain Laurel and Malarkey will perform at the Acoustic Café at Walter Reed. The concert is open to all ages, and a 55+ Pass is not required. Registration number: 913301-02.

Opera appreciation continues at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Lubber Run with the second part of “The Enchanted Island” and professional commentary from George Cecchetti. Registration number: 913300-04.

Pianist Valerie Welsh will lead a Piano Lounge singalong at Lubber Run at 4 p.m. April 16, featuring a selection of songs from the mid-1960s with lyrics provided. Registration number: 913301-24.

Ashley Gomez, director of Lubber Run 55+ Center, will lead a virtual exploration of the Spanish-speaking world at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 17. April’s featured destination is Andorra, Europe’s sixth-smallest country. Registration number: 913304-25.

Volunteer Suzie Pratts will lead drop-in line-dancing practice at 11:05 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. No partner is needed.

Recurring Fitness Activities

Water walking and lap swimming are available at Long Bridge Aquatics Center from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. No instruction is provided. Participants must have a Long Bridge membership or pay the daily admission fee. The center is at 333 Long Bridge Drive, and sessions are drop-in.

Volunteer-led Tai Chi practice is offered without instruction from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays at Aurora Hills and from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Walter Reed. All sessions are drop-in.

Skating for adults 55 and older takes place from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, accessible through the roof-level parking area at Ballston Quarter. Skate rentals cost $1. Advance registration is required through the iceplex’s Senior Public Skate page.

Pickleball is available for 55+ Pass holders at Walter Reed from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 2:15 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

Arlington Mill offers drop-in pickleball from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
