Arlington’s Office of 55+ Programs is welcoming spring with exercise classes, educational talks, cultural outings and a new Memory Care Café.
Programs are held in person at 55+ Centers unless identified as virtual. Participation generally requires a 55+ Pass, available for an annual fee starting at $20. Register at registration.arlingtonva.us or call 703-228-4747.
Stay Active and Independent for Life classes will focus on strength, balance and overall fitness. The free sessions meet Mondays and Thursdays from March 3 through May 22 at 1 p.m. at Lubber Run 55+ Center, registration #913502-01. A second series meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 4 through May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Arlington Mill 55+ Center, registration #913502-02.
Wednesday, March 19
Elder law attorney Ed Zetlin will explain living trusts and their benefits during a virtual presentation at 11 a.m. Registration #913404-03.
Arlington Park Naturalist Bobbi Farley will discuss animals emerging in spring and lead a hike beginning at 11 a.m. at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. Walking shoes are recommended. Registration #913106-15.
A video presentation of “Siegfried,” the third opera in Richard Wagner’s “Ring Cycle,” will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Lubber Run 55+ Center. The New York Met performance will include professional commentary from George Cecchetti. Registration #913300-02.
Cory Cox, a 55+ operations supervisor, will present a program about the women’s suffrage movement at 2 p.m. at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. Registration #913400-30.
Valerie Welsh will perform Golden Oldies from the early 1960s during a Piano Lounge and Sing-Along at 4 p.m. at Lubber Run 55+ Center. Lyrics will be provided. Registration #913304-23.
Author Sushmita Mazumdar will share women’s culinary stories at 6 p.m. at Arlington Mill 55+ Center as part of Women’s History Month. Her book, “Columbia Pike Recipes for Recovery,” explores how food connected a community during a time of need. Registration #913400-31.
Thursday, March 20
Tech specialist Nick Englund will offer tips for using Uber and Lyft during a virtual program at 10 a.m. Registration #913403-02.
Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Food Volunteers will demonstrate heart-healthy recipes at 11 a.m. at Langston-Brown 55+ Center. Registration #913501-01.
A new Memory Care Café will meet from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Walter Reed 55+ Center. Arlington Adult Day Program and library staff will lead dementia-friendly activities for people with dementia and their family caregivers.

March 24-25
On Monday, March 24, the 55+ Travel group will visit the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., for the retrospective “Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist and All That It Implies,” highlighting the artist’s impact. The trip costs $11 for Arlington residents and $13 for nonresidents. Registration #902503-09.
Arlington Park Naturalist Simon Willig will lead an early-wildflower walk at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, along the wooded trails at Gulf Branch Nature Center, 3608 Military Road. The program will examine the plants’ ecology. Registration #913106-25.

The 55+ Travel group will have afternoon tea at Reynolds Tavern Tea Room in Annapolis, Maryland. The trip costs $80 for Arlington residents and $92 for nonresidents. Registration #902503-10.
Travel specialist Susan Court will discuss her experiences exploring Alsace, the Germanic region of France, at 1 p.m. at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. Registration #913400-28.
Cherrydale Library staff will visit Langston-Brown 55+ Center at 1:30 p.m. Participants can apply for an Arlington Public Library card, learn how to access free e-books and audiobooks, and check out titles for spring reading. Registration #913400-03.

VHC Health Auxiliary Vice President Mary Gleason will explain hospital volunteer opportunities and the process for becoming a volunteer at 11 a.m. at Langston-Brown 55+ Center. Registration #913400-04.

Arlington Urban Forest Manager Vincent Verweij will provide an in-depth virtual overview of the county’s tree canopy at 3 p.m. Registration #913400-12.

The virtual “Fortunes in the Attic” program will offer participants a chance to have an item researched for its potential value while learning how to identify antiques.
