Arlington Scouts will collect food door to door Saturday, Nov. 8, during the national Scouting for Food drive, which provides donations to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
The event is AFAC’s largest single-day food drive of the year. Since 1995, its partnership with Scouting for Food has brought in 1 million pounds of donated food.
Scouts will place door hangers Nov. 1 in neighborhoods where pickups are planned. Residents should leave donations outside their doors near their mailboxes by 8 a.m. Nov. 8.
Donations should be packed in a bag or other container. Glass jars, expired food and perishable items will not be accepted.
AFAC’s most-requested foods include canned tuna, chicken and salmon; low-sugar cereal; canned beans and tomato products; cooking oil in plastic containers; and peanut butter in plastic containers.
Anyone who misses the Scouts or does not receive a collection notice may take nonperishable food to these locations during regular operating hours:
- AFAC Warehouse, 2708 S. Nelson St.
- Fairlington Community Center, 3308 S. Stafford St.
- Arlington Mill Community Center, 909 S. Dinwiddie St.
- Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St.
- Cherrydale Library, 2190 Military Road
- Shirlington Library, 4200 Campbell Ave.
- Westover Library, 1644 N. McKinley Road
AFAC also accepts monetary donations from people who cannot contribute food.
