A steady line of voters stretched through Madison Community Center on Saturday, April 18, as Arlington County residents cast early ballots on a proposed change to Virginia’s Constitution.
Madison was one of three countywide voting locations open on the final day of early voting. By 2 p.m., 900 voters had cast ballots on the question.
The proposed amendment would allow the Virginia General Assembly to temporarily establish new congressional districts ahead of upcoming elections. Virginia’s standard redistricting process would resume after the 2030 census.
Supporters said the measure would help protect free and fair elections and level the playing field in the midterms amid actions by Donald Trump.
Opponents characterized the proposal as a power grab by Richmond politicians, arguing that it would undermine competitive elections by allowing elected officials to choose their voters.
