A person was hospitalized after falling about 200 feet down a steep ravine in McLean, while an armed Maryland man faces charges in an alleged attempt to kill a Trump administration official in Arlington.

Rescuers pull person from McLean ravine
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews responded around 2:14 p.m. to the 700 block of Bulls Neck Road after someone fell down a slope.
Crews found the person approximately 200 feet down a ravine on a steep hillside. Technical rescue teams used rope systems to bring the person out. The patient was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Man accused of targeting OMB director
Colin Demarco, a 26-year-old Maryland resident, faces attempted murder charges after allegedly arriving armed at Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought’s Arlington home.
Police took Demarco into custody Jan. 22, roughly five months after the alleged Aug. 10 incident. Authorities did not publicly announce the arrest until Thursday evening.
Veteran local reporter caught in major layoffs
Martin Weil, who had worked at The Washington Post since 1965, was among more than 300 journalists laid off Wednesday.
The cuts affected a newsroom of roughly 800 journalists and hit the local news operation particularly hard. Weil was one of the newspaper’s final remaining links to its Watergate-era staff.
Virginia House advances gun-control package
Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates passed more than half a dozen gun-control bills Thursday over strong Republican opposition.
The package would restrict access to some firearms, strengthen storage requirements and broaden potential civil liability for the gun industry.
Suspect arrested in Fair Oaks tire thefts
A Maryland man has been charged with multiple counts of larceny in connection with tires allegedly stolen from numerous vehicles in the Fair Oaks area.
Police began investigating after a theft was reported Oct. 24 at the Extended Stay on Route 50. The suspect was arrested Sunday, Feb. 1, after his vehicle activated a license-plate alert in the Town of Herndon.
Police prepare for monks’ peace walk
Fairfax County police plan to assist Buddhist monks taking part in the Monks’ Walk for Peace as the group travels through the county.
After being welcomed in Richmond, the monks are expected to stop for lunch Sunday, Feb. 8, at Hoa Nghiem Pagoda in Fort Belvoir, according to Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn.
Reston recreation passes go on sale
Reston Association recreation passes for the 2026 season are now available, providing access to association pools as well as tennis and pickleball courts.
Members can receive a pass at no additional cost through their annual assessment. For the first time, they may also choose automatic renewal when paying that assessment.
Burke Lake Park seeks seasonal workers
Burke Lake Park will hold drop-in interviews for seasonal jobs at its information center from noon to 5 p.m. on Feb. 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27.
No appointment is required. Applicants can learn about openings, complete an application and interview during the same visit.

A hotel is seeking a limited Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control license allowing on- and off-premises sales of beer and wine, according to a newly posted legal notice.
Friday could bring more snow
Snow is likely after 2 p.m. Friday as cloud cover increases and temperatures reach a high near 34 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 40%, with calm winds shifting south at about 5 mph.
Snow could continue until around 1 a.m. Saturday before skies gradually clear. The overnight low is expected to fall to about 13 degrees. Northwest winds could reach 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph, while the precipitation chance remains 40%.
