Virginia transportation officials are studying an approximately 11-mile extension of the express lanes system along the southern Capital Beltway, stretching from Fairfax County across the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge into Maryland.
The proposal would extend the lanes from the Springfield Interchange, where I-95, I-395 and I-495 meet, to the MD 210 interchange in Prince George’s County. The Virginia Department of Transportation is conducting the environmental study with the Federal Highway Administration and other agencies in Virginia and Maryland.
The location was identified for further study in the I-95 Corridor Improvement Plan adopted by Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board.
VDOT plans to present three alternatives intended to improve express-lane continuity, expand travel options, ease congestion, make travel times more reliable and improve safety. Officials will also share preliminary traffic analysis, study updates and information about coordination with local, state and federal agencies.
Four public meetings were scheduled in Virginia and Maryland:
- Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at West Potomac High School, 6500 Quander Road in Alexandria
- Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Oxon Hill High School, 6701 Leyte Drive in Oxon Hill
- Monday, April 7, 2025, at Thomas A. Edison High School, 5801 Franconia Road in Alexandria
- Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Nannie J. Lee Memorial Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson Street in Alexandria
Each meeting was set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with an open house and a presentation at 7 p.m. VDOT representatives were expected to answer questions at information stations.
