Virginia has confirmed bird flu at the Metro Richmond Zoo for the first time in the facility’s 30-year history. Two cases were detected following at least three other recent outbreaks in the Washington region that killed an estimated 1 million chickens and put officials on alert.
Firefighters helped several people evacuate and rescued two dogs from a garden-style apartment fire Wednesday in the 7300 block of Route 29 in West Falls Church. No civilians or firefighters were injured.
A new Onelife Fitness center may be coming to the Mosaic District. A zoning verification letter submitted to Fairfax County indicates the company is considering a facility at 2910 District Avenue spanning more than 30,000 square feet and including one or more pools.
The space was previously occupied by Custom Ink, whose lease expires March 31. The parties involved have not commented on the potential fitness center.

Virginia state Sen. Stella Pekarsky, a former Fairfax County School Board member, has proposed legislation requiring homeschooling parents to document their teaching qualifications and their children’s academic progress. Current state law includes an exemption for parents who withdraw their children from public school for religious reasons.
Club Pilates Hybla Valley plans to open Thursday, Jan. 23, at Mount Vernon Plaza. The studio, located at 7702 B-D Richmond Highway, specializes in Reformer-based Pilates training and has begun accepting bookings through its app.
