Temporary bus-only lanes will help shuttle buses move through Montgomery County during Red Line construction in summer 2026, part of an effort to reduce delays along the busy corridor.
Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke said the dedicated lanes are intended to make summer travel easier despite the disruption caused by construction. The Maryland State Highway Administration, Montgomery County Department of Transportation and law enforcement agencies are helping establish and enforce the lanes.
The Maryland Department of Transportation is also offering a MARC Train discount during the project. Assistant Secretary Joe McAndrew, who serves on the WMATA Board, said the bus lanes and discounted train service are designed to keep travelers moving while easing congestion and maintaining reliable transportation.
Metro serves roughly four million people across a 2,054-square-mile area encompassing Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Its network includes six rail lines, 98 stations, 126 bus routes and door-to-door paratransit service. The system recorded 268.9 million trips in 2025.
