Northern Virginia Family Service received a record $28,800 donation after the Washington Capitals’ 2024-2025 regular season powered Burke & Herbert Bank’s annual Goals for Good program.
The bank contributed $100 for every goal scored by the Capitals during the NHL regular season. The resulting gift was the largest awarded to a single organization in the program’s 10-year history.
Burke & Herbert Bank CEO David Boyle said the strong hockey season helped generate the record contribution. He praised NVFS for helping local residents build self-sufficiency and said the bank remains committed to the communities it serves.
The Goals for Good initiative began in 2014 through a partnership with Monumental Sports. It has supported nonprofits focused on children, housing and veterans across the Washington metropolitan area, generating more than $225,000 in donations.
Previous beneficiaries include the Capital Youth Empowerment Program, Willing Warriors, GrandInvolve, Operation Renewed Hope Foundation, Homestretch, Rebuilding Together DC-Alexandria, Connect Our Kids, Alice’s Kids and Most Valuable Kids.
NVFS President and CEO Stephanie Berkowitz said the contribution will strengthen the organization’s work creating paths toward better health and economic well-being for area residents.
NVFS, which marked its 100th anniversary in 2024, serves more than 40,000 people as it works to help Northern Virginia residents achieve self-sufficiency.
