An 88-year-old Chantilly man faces murder and firearm charges after his wife was fatally shot at their home Friday, Feb. 28.

Douglas Sommer was charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Fairfax County police believe the shooting happened during an argument between the couple.

Elsewhere across Northern Virginia:

Former Fairfax County police Sgt. Wesley Shifflett had his prison sentence commuted by Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Shifflett, who fatally shot a man in Tysons, was sentenced Feb. 28 to three years in state prison after being convicted of recklessly handling a firearm.

Ricardo Singleton will serve six years in prison for opening fire on Fairfax County police following a high-speed chase. The hours-long pursuit began in Arlington after Singleton displayed a gun at the courthouse and fled by car, according to police.

The owners of the Dulles Greenway filed a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn a Virginia law regulating tolls on the 14-mile highway. The suit also challenges the State Corporation Commission’s rejection of the Greenway’s latest proposed toll increase.

An Arlington official is interested in joining a vehicle-noise monitoring pilot program. Legislation awaiting Youngkin’s action would allow localities in Northern Virginia and the Fredericksburg area to use automated equipment to measure exhaust noise from passing vehicles.

Contractors are preparing to begin improvements at Hybla Valley Park. Active construction is scheduled to start during the first week of March and, weather permitting, conclude by the end of summer 2025.

Fairfax City police are asking the public to help identify a man connected to a home burglary. A doorbell camera recorded the man knocking at a residence in the 3800 block of Tedrich Boulevard on Feb. 26. Cash and jewelry were stolen from the same home later that day.

Fairfax County Public Library is marking Women’s History Month throughout March with presentations, workshops, storytimes, crafts and other programs highlighting women who influenced Fairfax County and American history.
