On July 16, more than 30 citizen-scientist teams fanned out across Northern Virginia in what George Mason University’s Virginia Climate Center called the Urban Heat Island Mapping Project, armed with magnetic sensors no larger than an E-ZPass transponder.
Each team drove the same route three times that day—once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening—with the roof-mounted sensors continuously drawing air samples to record localized temperature variations. The project was organized by the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and George Mason University.
“It’s drawing air in through that vent on the front continuously,” explained Meredith Haines, one of the Herndon-area volunteers, as she and her husband John prepared for their mapping runs.
The Haines family, oceanographers from Vienna, drove a Herndon route that wound through single-family neighborhoods, apartment complexes, cul-de-sacs, and downtown Herndon. On one of their runs, Meredith Haines recorded a high of 36 degrees Celsius—96.8 degrees Fahrenheit—as the sensor tracked how heat concentrations shifted across the landscape.
Each volunteer used a mobile application to transmit their collected readings to George Mason University as they completed their routes. The accumulated data from all 30-plus teams will eventually become maps and visualizations intended to support urban planning decisions, public-health interventions, and efforts to address environmental inequities across the region.
Meredith Haines said participants expected a full project report in October 2026, though the analysis remained incomplete at the time of this reporting.
